  Oral Language is really important..... Are we focusing enough on it? As we navigate our literacy journey together we can all agree on one thing.... Literacy impacts all subject areas...... and WE ALL should be focusing on it.   Creative Thinking..... We say we foster it.... but what is it exactly? " Creative Thinking, in its simplest form, is the ability to make something new....." "The mental process of thinking creatively requires students to draw on their imagination, using their skills to combine, change, and reshape, refine, or improve ideas and solutions"  The Thinking Classroom by Alice Vigors Creative thinking is a way of thinking that leads to the generation of valuable and original ideas.  It is the ability to problem-solve.  What exactly is a sight word anyway?  Don't we teach those in primary grades and then don't visit them anymore?   Well..... not exactly. Dr. Linnea Ehri defines sight words as: "All words that are sufficiently practiced, not just high-frequency words or irregularly spelled words become sight words when read from memory." Let's Chat About Background Knowledge.... I think we all agree that we are not "throwing out skills instruction"....   Let's Reflect..... We have learned A LOT in the last few weeks.  Let's take a week to reflect and answer the following questions.   Well.... this is opening a "can of worms".... but we have been doing that for a few weeks now:) We have visited the Simple View of Reading and the 5 Pillars.. Let's spend a bit of time on the last one, comprehension.(  Don't worry, we will come back to all 5 pillars eventually....) There is some buzz in some educational communities that question the importance of teaching reading skills vs the importance of background knowledge in order to increase comprehension.  It is the "current buzz" within this reading pendulum shift.   Repeat...... Repeat....... Repeat.....  There is growing evidence of the importance of fluency within the 5 literacy pillars.   What do you think of the below information? Why repetition is important in reading instruction ( click on the title for access) Check out  minutes 32-40  on Melissa and Lori Love Literacy Podcast with Angie Hanlin (   click on the title to access) The number of repetitions needed when students are learning foundational reading skills: 1-4 repetitions for a gifted student 4-14 repetitions for a typical student 14-40 repetitions for a struggling student 40-200 repetitions for a student with dyslexia or learning disability Wait.... could this apply to remembering vocabulary as well???   Nationally Only 32% of 4th graders are reading on Grade Level….. It gets worse…. Only 29% of 8th graders are considered proficient in reading…..
